21st January 2013 - Annual Dinner
Dear Members,
It gives me great pleasure to announce that the annual dinner of the
Cambridge Society will be held on the evening of Monday 21st January
2013 from 19hrs.
We are delighted to welcome Professor Mark Janse as our guest and
speaker. Having studied Classics, Hebrew and Linguistics, Prof. Janse
has held professorships at the Universities of Ghent and Utrecht;
visiting fellowships at All Souls College Oxford, Amsterdam University
and the Onassis Foundation; visiting professorships at Ohio State
University, the Universities of Patras, Ghent and Amsterdam; is
research associate at Bangor University and a Senior Visiting Scholar
of the Alexander S. Onassis foundation.
Prof. Janse will speak not about the life of languages but of their
death; he is expected to draw upon his own discovery of living
speakers of Cappadocian Greek, a language thought to be long since
extinct.
We are most pleased that the dinner will again be held at the "Club
des Officers du Premier Regiment de Guides", (32, rue d'Arlon,
Brussels 1000, close to Luxembourg Station).
We would like all members to feel they can attend (partners welcome,
if space allows!). Accordingly, whilst the full ticket price for
members & their partners is €60/head, we would like to offer two
special concessions. Firstly a special price for members under 30 of
€40/head and secondly the possibility of attendance subsidised by
society funds if anyone should be in a position of genuine need
(please apply accordingly). The price for non-member Cantabrigians is
€70.
Please reply to this e-mail to confirm your attendance to the
Secretary, Caroline Laske, by 14.01.2013 and make your payment to the
Cambridge Society bank account (BE 84 3770 0232 0559 in the name of
Vierlich-Jürcke) mentioning "Annual Dinner 2013" before that date.
Your participation is confirmed once your payment has been received.
(Please note, that no refunds for cancellations can be made after
16.01.2013.)
Dress is black tie or smart evening dress.
On behalf of all the Committee,
Yours sincerely,
Rupert Carter
P.S. It will perhaps interest certain of you that Mr Guy Knapton has
secured, with the kindness of Graham's, a case of Late Bottled Vintage
Port for when the moment comes.
