Baroness Susan Greenfield “The Future of the Brain”, Monday April 14th 2014
We are pleased to invite you to the next Speaker Evening organised by the Oxford Society, on Monday April 14th, when Baroness Susan Greenfield, the eminent scientist, writer, broadcaster and member of the House of Lords will give us a talk entitled “The Future of the Brain”. Susan Greenfield has justly acquired a reputation for her ability to explain complex scientific ideas to a non-specialist audience. We are extremely excited that such a prestigious speaker has agreed to address us and in order to allow as many of you as possible to attend the speech we are maintaining the tried and tested formula and venue.
Baroness Greenfield's research is to identify a novel approach to the treatment of Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. She has also however, a keen interest in the neuroscience of consciousness. She is Senior Research Fellow at Lincoln College, Oxford; she started her academic career at St Hilda's before doing a D.Phil at St Hugh's. From 2005 to 2012, she was Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. Until 8 January 2010, she was director of the Royal Institution of Great Britain. In September 2013, she co-founded the biotech company Neuro-bio Ltd, where she is Chief Scientific Officer.
It will be held at our usual venue, the conference room of the Dominican Priory, Avenue de la Renaissance 40, 1000 Brussels (Merode area), we will start at 18.45 with drinks and the talk, followed by a discussion, will commence at 19.15. After this we will have a dinner at the restaurant 'Le Pre aux Clercs" for those who wish to do so. Attendance at the talk is free for members of the Society and one guest each, the dinner will probably cost about €40, details of the latter will follow later. Members of the Society are considered to be those who have paid a subscription for 2014. All others will be asked to pay an entrance fee of €10 per head.
